Space weather environment

Solar activities have caused damaged to human society since the ancient times.Our modern age is dependent on the ubiquitous presence of electromagnetic-based services, and it is witnessing increased demand for electronics and hi-tech systems.Because these systems and electronics are all sensitive to solar activities, space weather environment research studies on sunspots, ionosphere, and magnetic field have become increasingly important.

Space weather environment forecast

• In order to minimize damage to the national industry caused by changes in the space weather environment, the Korean Space Weather Center under the National Radio Research Agency monitors solar activity 24 hours a day. The center provides forecasting service on sunspot flareups to the public, airlines, military, and related organizations.

• The Korean Space Weather Center participates as the Korean regional representative organization in International Space Environment Service (ISES), the international organization that gathers and shares observed data on solar activities. The Center cooperates closely with the United States, Japan, and 14 other member countries to respond promptly to solar activities.
